Statistics: Frequencies

Objectives (5 - 7 minutes)

  • Main Objective:

    • To provide students with a clear and comprehensive understanding of the concept of frequency and its application in the discipline of Statistics.
  • Secondary Objectives:

    1. To develop students' ability to interpret and analyze data sets to determine the frequency of each element.
    2. To encourage active participation of students through solving practical exercises and group discussions.
    3. To promote students' critical thinking by applying the frequency theory to real-world situations, such as opinion polls and market studies.

Introduction (10 - 15 minutes)

  • Review of Previous Content:

    1. The teacher should start by reviewing the basic concepts of Statistics, such as the definition of data, variables, and the importance of collecting and organizing them.
    2. Next, briefly review the types of variables: qualitative (nominal and ordinal) and quantitative (discrete and continuous).
    3. The teacher should also review the notion of graphs and tables, as well as their importance in representing statistical data.
  • Problem Situations:

    1. Present two problem situations to the students involving the frequency of a certain element. Examples:
      • Situation 1: 'In a class of 30 students, the teacher wants to know how many students have more than 1 sibling.'
      • Situation 2: 'In a beauty contest, the organization wants to know the frequency of candidates taller than 1.70m.'
    2. Ask students to think about how they could solve these situations, using what they remember about Statistics.
  • Contextualization:

    1. Explain to students that Statistics is widely used in various areas of knowledge and daily life, from weather forecasting to the analysis of research results and studies.
    2. Remind them that frequency is one of the key concepts of Statistics and is essential for data analysis and interpretation.
  • Introduction to the Topic:

    1. Introduce students to the concept of Frequency. Explain that frequency is the number of times a certain element appears in a data set.
    2. Illustrate with the data from the two problem situations presented earlier. Explain that to solve these situations, we need to count the number of occurrences of a certain element, in other words, calculate the frequency.
    3. Capture students' attention by sharing that Statistics, particularly the concept of frequency, is widely used in market research, election predictions, and even in the creation of movie and series recommendation algorithms!
  • Attention Grabber:

    1. Present an interesting fact to students about the importance of Statistics in our daily lives. Example: 'Did you know that Netflix uses Statistics to determine which movies and series to suggest to you? They analyze how often you watch certain genres and directors, and use that data to make their recommendations!'
    2. Initiate a discussion with students, asking if they can think of other everyday situations where Statistics and the concept of frequency could be useful.

Development (20 - 25 minutes)

  • Theory:

    1. Concept of Absolute Frequency: The teacher should explain that absolute frequency is the number of times a certain element appears in a data set. Emphasize that absolute frequency is always an integer and never negative.
    2. Concept of Relative Frequency: Next, the teacher should introduce the concept of relative frequency. Explain that relative frequency is the ratio between the absolute frequency of a certain element and the total size of the data set. For example, if in a class of 30 students, 10 have more than 1 sibling, the absolute frequency is 10 and the relative frequency is 10/30 = 1/3.
    3. Concept of Cumulative Frequency: The teacher should then explain the concept of cumulative frequency. Clarify that the cumulative frequency of a certain element is the sum of the absolute frequencies of all elements that precede the element in question, including itself. For example, if in a class of 30 students, 10 have more than 1 sibling and 5 have more than 2 siblings, the cumulative frequency of students with more than 2 siblings is 10+5 = 15.
    4. Concept of Cumulative Relative Frequency: Finally, the teacher should introduce the concept of cumulative relative frequency. Explain that cumulative relative frequency is the ratio between the cumulative frequency and the total size of the data set. For example, if in a class of 30 students, 10 have more than 1 sibling and 5 have more than 2 siblings, the cumulative relative frequency of students with more than 2 siblings is (10+5)/30 = 1/2.
  • Practice:

    1. After the theoretical explanation, the teacher should propose a set of practical exercises for students to apply the concepts learned. The exercises should vary in difficulty and complexity, allowing students to gradually develop their skills in calculating and interpreting frequencies.
    2. The exercises may include solving the problem situations presented in the Introduction, as well as creating new problem situations that explore different aspects of the frequency concept. For example, 'In your class of 30 students, the teacher wants to know how many students have less than 1 sibling. What is the absolute frequency? And the relative frequency? And the cumulative frequency? And the cumulative relative frequency?'

  • Review:

    1. At the end of the lesson, the teacher should review the main points covered, emphasizing the importance of the frequency concept in Statistics and in various areas of knowledge and daily life.
    2. The teacher should also review the exercises solved and discussed, reinforcing the concepts learned and clarifying any remaining doubts.
    3. Finally, the teacher should encourage students to reflect on what they learned in the lesson and evaluate their own learning. They should encourage students to identify concepts they still do not fully understand and seek clarification in future classes or individual studies.

    3. They should encourage students to realize that Statistics is not just a school subject, but a powerful tool that can be used to understand and transform the world around them.
