Space in the Construction of Dance Movements

Lesson Plan | Active Methodology | Space in the Construction of Dance Movements

KeywordsSpace and Dance, Adaptive Movements, Choreography and Space, Spatial Configurations, Body Expression, Creativity in Dance, Collaboration and Interaction, Critical Reflection, Practical Application, Spatial Awareness
Necessary MaterialsTape, Music and sound system, Various musical instruments, Assorted objects (chairs, tables, tape), Classroom or similar space

Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The objectives phase is vital for clearly stating what is expected at the end of the lesson. It acts as a guide for both the teacher and the students regarding specific learning aims, making sure everyone is on the same page and concentrated on the skills to develop. This section also assists in establishing a framework for assessing student progress and making adaptations during the lesson.

Objective Utama:

1. Investigate how different spatial arrangements impact movements in dance, aiding students in understanding the relationship between space and body dynamics.

2. Offer students chances to explore and discover various forms of spatial orientation in dance, fostering creativity and personal expression.

Objective Tambahan:

  1. Promote collaboration and interaction among students through group activities that incorporate space in dance.
  2. Enhance students' observational and analytical skills as they reflect on how space can reshape the perception of dance movements.

Introduction

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

This introductory phase is essential for engaging students and prompting them to think critically about space's influence on dance. By presenting relatable challenges, students are encouraged to draw on their previous knowledge in a practical and reflective way. Contextualization helps link these concepts to real-life experiences, enhancing students' interest and making the topic more relevant.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Imagine performing on a tiny stage with many dancers. How do you think the restricted space would affect your dance movements?

2. Recall a dance performance where the dancers creatively utilized space. How did their use of space influence your view of the performance?

Contextualization

Dance is an expression of art that happens not only within the dancer’s body but also in the surrounding space. Larger spaces may allow for broader, more dynamic movements, while smaller spaces might evoke a feeling of intimacy and containment in the dance. Understanding how space impacts dance enables dancers to adjust to different environments, enhancing the versatility and expressiveness of their performances.

Development

Duration: (75 - 80 minutes)

The development phase is crucial for students to apply their understanding of the connections between space and dance in a practical and imaginative way. Through engaging and challenging activities, students are empowered to explore and experiment with how varying spatial arrangements can influence their danced movements. This practical application reinforces theoretical learning while promoting creativity, teamwork, and bodily expression.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Cramped Space Dance

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Investigate the impact of limited space on dance movements and inspire creativity in choreography.

- Description: In this activity, students will investigate how limited space impacts their dance movements. The teacher will mark off areas of varying sizes on the classroom floor using tape. Each group will be assigned a specific area to create choreography that adapts to that space.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Mark out areas of different sizes on the floor using tape.

  • Each group selects an area and examines its dimensions.

  • Students discuss and plan a choreography that fits within the space.

  • Groups rehearse their dance, keeping spatial constraints in mind.

  • After rehearsals, each group performs for the class.

  • Facilitate a discussion about how space influenced their movements.

Activity 2 - Dynamic Space Dance

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Enhance students' skills in adapting to changes in space and music, fostering expression through dance.

- Description: Students will develop dances that shift in response to musical dynamics. Various instruments will suggest different spatial uses (like expansive rhythms with drums and contained ones with flutes). Students must alter their movements according to shifts in music and available space.

- Instructions:

  • Split students into groups of up to 5.

  • Explain that each piece of music will have a specific spatial dynamic.

  • Play different types of music, each linked to a particular spatial presentation.

  • Students create and rehearse dances aligned with the music's dynamics and proposed space.

  • Each group presents their dance, modifying movements as the music and space transition.

  • Lead a reflection on how changes in music and space influenced their dances.

Activity 3 - Creative Spatial Exploration

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Encourage creativity through the use of objects and spaces to craft innovative dance movements.

- Description: Students will use items such as chairs, tables, and tape to establish different spatial configurations within the room. Each group must create a choreography that interacts with these objects, exploring new avenues for movement and expression.

- Instructions:

  • Provide objects like chairs, tables, and tape.

  • Groups choose items and arrange them to form a unique environment.

  • Debate and formulate choreography that creatively involves the objects and space.

  • Groups rehearse their choreographies.

  • Present dances, highlighting interaction with the objects and space.

  • Discuss how the objects and spatial arrangement influenced the dance.

Feedback

Duration: (15 - 20 minutes)

This phase aims to engage students in reflecting and verbalising their learning from the practical activities. Group discussions underline the knowledge they've gained, encourage idea sharing, and enable peer learning. This phase also serves to evaluate understanding of how space affects dance movements and promotes applying that knowledge in wider contexts.

Group Discussion

Wrap up the lesson with a group discussion involving all students. Start by reflecting on the activities undertaken and invite students to share their experiences and insights. Encourage each group to express how space influenced their choreography and what they learned when adapting their movements to changes in space and music. Motivate students to relate these experiences to future dance performances or other aspects of their life.

Key Questions

1. How did the size and shape of the space alter your movements during the dance?

2. What difficulties did you encounter in adjusting your choreography to the available spaces and objects?

3. How can you apply what you discovered today to other art forms or in everyday life?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The conclusion phase is pivotal for reinforcing the knowledge gained during the lesson, assisting students in synthesising information and insights from practical activities. Moreover, this section highlights the relevance of understanding space in dance for various facets of life, motivating students to implement their learning across diverse contexts, thus strengthening the connection between theoretical concepts and lived experiences.

Summary

In this lesson, we examined the ways in which space influences dance movements through practical activities that allowed students to experiment and adapt their movements in various spatial configurations. We discussed the significance of space in dance and how different environments can alter perception and execution of choreography.

Theory Connection

We linked theoretical concepts to practice by encouraging students to dance in spaces with differing limits and observe how they modified their movements. The activities provided a platform for students to apply theoretical insights about space in dance in a tangible manner, enhancing their awareness of space's effects on their performances.

Closing

The importance of this lesson transcends dance; it illustrates how our surroundings affect behavior and movement, a universal lesson applicable in any setting—be it at school, at home, or in public. Understanding space in dance cultivates greater spatial awareness and adaptability, which are essential skills in myriad aspects of daily life.
